On the way back to the office, Bailey sat quietly. She stared out the window. The car meandered along a winding country road. Jerry kept his distance behind a slow delivery truck in front of him. The truck finally turned into a driveway, narrowly missing a mailbox. Andy leaned toward Bailey several times, seemingly ready to ask something. He retreated back to his side of the car each time.

Bailey turned. “What is it? What do you want to ask me?” The car bounced around on the rough, rural road leading back to Madison.

“Over the last few months, you've shown me so much. You've explained so much. I feel like I know your process, like I can tell your story. And I do believe that you have a dramatically better way to treat cancer. Personalized and comprehensive.”

“I'll take that as a compliment, my friend.”

“But one thing remains. One question that you haven't answered.”

Bailey asked flatly, “What is that?”

“The injections.” The car came to a stop at a red light. Jerry adjusted his wide frame in the front seat. The tan leather creaked from the friction.

Bailey answered, “Ah yes, the injections.”

“What are they?” Andy asked.

Bailey pointed to the voice recorder, motioning for him to turn it off. “You really don't know?”

“Of course not,” Andy insisted. The car accelerated onto the ramp leading to a highway. “No one at the center says a word about the injections whenever I bring it up. My mom has no idea. I know it isn't a cure, but it certainly seems like a lynchpin.”

“You could say that.” A large truck emerged alongside of them. Jerry raced ahead and barely pulled ahead of it before their lane merged.

“What are you injecting, Doctor Bailey?”

Jerry poked his head backwards. He wanted to hear.

Bailey asked, “Have you ever heard of the trophoblastic theory of cancer?”

“Never.”

“Let me paint a picture for you.” Bailey turned and faced Andy. His eyes constantly shifted out the window. Cars pulling boats and jet skis raced up the road. Another summer weekend was upon them. “The term trophoblast is just another word for a cluster of cancer cells. Imagine cells connecting to a new tissue in the body. They attach and invade the previously healthy tissue as they multiply rapidly, digging deeper and deeper into this tissue. Sound at all familiar?”

Andy answered, “Not really.” Jerry raced past a semi on their right.

“I'll give you a hint. The initial cluster of cells drops down from a tube and attach to the tissue in a woman...” Bailey looked at Andy. The doctor waited for a response.

“Fallopian?” Andy asked. The buildings in central Madison began to rise ahead of them.

Doctor Bailey encouraged him, “You're right! A cluster of cancer cells acts somewhat similar to early-stage embryonic cells. An embryo drops into the uterus, attaches to its wall and rapidly eats away at the tissue while multiplying in a way that is identical to cancer. The conundrum with the exterior embryonic cells eating away at the uterus is that, normally, the immune system would attack a foreign object invading healthy tissue.
